It really helps in getting your head around the on- and kunyomi, as well as helping with some of the exceptions and reducing the amount of times you have to get a dictionary out. A good thing about this book is that it provides both on- and kun- readings. Big box for kanji. Possibly the best one of the most helpful features of this book, however, is the back where the answers are found.

I think you could probably get by with a good website and a pen and paper, or even a dictionary site like jisho. Below the set of kanji for each page there are 3comes a set of vocab that kookop those kanji, and also gives the furigana for pronunciation.
